What the day looks like
Ballarat is a little over an hour northwest of Melbourne and owes its scale to the 1850s gold rush, when the richest alluvial goldfield in the world turned a pastoral run into a city. The wealth is still visible in the width of Sturt Street and the ornament on its banks and hotels.
Most itineraries centre on Sovereign Hill, an open-air museum built over part of the original diggings, where costumed staff work the trades and visitors can pan the creek.

Good to know
Sovereign Hill is a large site with unsealed paths and takes several hours to see properly — comfortable shoes matter more than usual. Ballarat sits higher and colder than Melbourne, and winter days on the goldfields are genuinely cold.
