Wilsons Promontory nature day tour
Granite headlands, squeaking quartz sand and wombat country at the southernmost tip of mainland Australia.

What the day looks like
Wilsons Promontory — the Prom — is the southernmost point of mainland Australia, about three hours southeast of Melbourne through Gippsland farmland. The park is a granite peninsula of rounded boulders, white beaches and low heath, and the wildlife is unusually easy to see around Tidal River.
It is the longest drive of the day tours and the most walking-oriented. The reward is a coastline that looks nothing like the rest of Victoria.
Stops usually included
- Squeaky Beach, where the rounded quartz grains squeak underfoot
- Tidal River, the park hub and wildlife area
- Whisky Bay and its granite boulders
- Norman Beach and the Mount Oberon car park lookout
Good to know
This is a walking day on sand and rock, so footwear matters. Wombats and wallabies are common around dusk near the camping flats but are wild animals and should not be fed. Mobile coverage inside the park is patchy to absent.
